Relationship dates for seven celebrity marriages: the record behind each date and what it proves
An index of seven celebrity marriage dates with the record and outlet behind each, day-level dates as reported, how to read a timestamp, and what a date can and cannot prove.
A relationship date is only as good as the record behind it. This index lists seven celebrity marriages that carry a traceable source, names the outlet and the document, and marks what the record cannot prove. The table gives each date at the precision its source supports, and the section after it adds day-level dates as widely reported.
What to take away
- An announcement date bounds when the public could know something. It does not date the event.
- A full entry needs three fieldsthe date the statement carries, the date it went live, and the date you retrieved it. Whoever pulls the source records the last two.
- A county clerk's marriage record gives a filing date, not a ceremony date. The two often differ by days.
- Five outlets publishing within the hour is one wire item, not five confirmations.
- A link that 404s is a dead citation. Store the wording, not the pointer.
The index
| Entry | What it is | Source | Date it rests on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beyoncé and Jay-Z | Marriage licence filed in Scarsdale, New York, before a private ceremony | Scarsdale village licence, reported by People | Licence filing date, 2008 |
| Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds | Wedding at Boone Hall, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina | Charleston County marriage record; People and Us Weekly coverage | Ceremony date, September 2012 |
| Kim Kardashian and Kanye West | Engagement, then wedding in Florence, Italy | E! broadcast of the proposal; Florence mayor's office date announcement | Engagement October 2013; wedding May 2014 |
| Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez | Private ceremony at home in Montecito, California | Santa Barbara County marriage record; Vogue confirmation | Ceremony date, May 2021 |
| Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck | Las Vegas marriage licence, Clark County, Nevada | Clark County clerk record; Lopez's own newsletter | Licence date, July 2022 |
| Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker | Ceremony in Portofino, Italy, after a Santa Barbara licence | Santa Barbara County record; press coverage of the Portofino ceremony | Licence May 2022; ceremony May 2022 |
| Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner | Las Vegas ceremony after the Billboard Music Awards | Clark County clerk record; People coverage | Ceremony date, May 2019 |
Each row is a starting point, not a conclusion. The county clerk holds the licence and the certificate. The state health department holds the certified copy. Neither proves a relationship is current, and neither dates a breakup.
How an entry gets on the list
An entry qualifies when a primary document exists and a news outlet has reported it. The document is the licence, the certificate or a court docket. The outlet is the one that published first, not the one you happened to find.
Two tests decide whether the entry stays.
The announcement-versus-confirmation test. A statement from the couple or a representative is an announcement. A record from a clerk is a confirmation. Keep them in separate columns, because a couple can announce an engagement that never produces a licence.
The 48-hour screen. Rumours that appear and vanish inside two days without a document stay off the list. Most do. The ones that survive usually produce a filing, a statement or a court entry; the desk method for separation rumours covers the rest.
Distribution is not corroboration: repeated copies of one report are one source. The Associated Press news values and principles put verification before publication, with attribution as the default.
Jurisdiction decides what a record shows
A marriage record is not one document. What it contains depends on where it was filed.
| Jurisdiction | What the clerk releases | What it will not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Clark County, Nevada | Licence date and names; the Clerk issues the licence and the Recorder holds recorded certificates | Whether a ceremony followed |
| Davidson County, Tennessee | Licence and certificate records, subject to county release rules | Nothing about a separation |
| Cook County, Illinois | Certificate copies on request to the County Clerk | Current address of either party |
| New York State | Licence and certificate, issued by town and city clerks | Anything about property |
| Texas | Licence and certificate, with practice varying by county | Community property questions |
A docket date is not a decree date, and a decree date is not the date a marriage ended in any sense a reader can use.
Day-level dates as widely reported
These dates come from press coverage of each marriage. They are a starting point for checking the clerk's record, not a substitute for it.
- Beyoncé and Jay-Zthe wedding is reported for April 4, 2008.
- Blake Lively and Ryan Reynoldsthe wedding at Boone Hall is reported for September 9, 2012.
- Kim Kardashian and Kanye Westthe proposal is reported for October 21, 2013, and the Florence wedding for May 24, 2014.
- Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomezthe Montecito ceremony is reported for May 15, 2021.
- Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleckthe Las Vegas ceremony is dated July 16, 2022 in the couple's own announcement, which Lopez published on July 17, 2022.
- Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barkerthe Santa Barbara licence is reported for May 15, 2022 and the Portofino ceremony for May 22, 2022.
- Joe Jonas and Sophie Turnerthe Las Vegas ceremony followed the May 1, 2019 Billboard Music Awards, and coverage differs on whether it fell late on May 1 or in the early hours of May 2.
The Jonas and Turner entry shows why the rule above matters: the day boundary and the time zone changed which date a source could carry. For each entry, the announcement is a different event from the record. The announcement bounds when the public could know, while the licence or certificate dates the legal act.
Reading a timestamp
A publication timestamp records a publisher's decision. Embargoes, exclusives and syndication all move it. Record it as a fact about the publisher, in its own field.
The date a statement carries, the date it went live and the date you retrieved it answer three different questions.
A record with one date column will pick whichever the importer found first. Keep the wording you relied on, because pages get edited under a timestamp that still reads as original.
Republication is not a new event. Feed regeneration and site migrations reset dates, and an old claim re-enters circulation looking current. Compare the timestamp against the content: text referring to things older than its own date has been republished.
Handling the day boundary
Does the source give a UTC offset?
record timestamp with its offset
state which zone the displayed date is in
A statement published late in one place is published the next day in another, and both timestamps are correct. Record the offset where the source gives one, and derive nothing from a difference under a day.
Where an order depends on hours, it usually cannot be established. How to show an order you cannot support is in the notes on dating timeline claims.
What a date does establish
It establishes that a statement was public from a point in time, bounding what anyone could have known before it. It establishes the sequence of statements relative to each other, with offsets recorded.
It establishes a fact about the publisher, which is often what the entry is really about.
What a first-party statement settles beyond its own timing is covered in the engagements source guide.
Common questions
Five outlets published within an hour. Does that corroborate the claim?
No. It is the signature of an embargo lift or a single wire item. Corroboration means separate underlying evidence, which has to be shown rather than inferred from timing.
The page shows a date but no time. What should be recorded?
The date as shown, marked as day-precision, plus the date you retrieved it. Do not supply a time, and do not let an import assign midnight in some zone and treat it as data.
An article's date changed between visits. Which one is right?
Both are facts about the page at different moments. Record what you saw and when you saw it, and note the change. It is also a reason to have stored the wording.
Does a syndicated copy count as a separate source?
No. It is the same item redistributed. Trace it to the original, and if the original is unreachable, say the copy is a syndication rather than presenting it as a second outlet.
